Pigman Cottage

Some houses are designed with their feet firmly on the ground. Others begin as dreams with feet propped up on a beach chair. This home began with a whimsical thought. What if we found an old abandoned lighthouse and built a beach cottage around it?

Karen and Stan Pigman wanted something to remind them of summers spend on Bald Head Island. They wanted a home that would look like it was on the beach, but different from their neighbors. We took the stairs and elevator for the home and molded them to look like Old Baldy. New York artist, David DiSantis, added wrought iron pieces shaped like mango vines, as if the abandoned lighthouse grew its’ own stair rails.

Working with both height and depth restrictions, we made sure the water side of the cottage had plenty of deck space for entertaining and enjoying the sun. The twin peaks of the water elevation are a nod to the two crow’s nest offices that both Karen and Stan enjoy. The offices are fitted out with pecky cypress, in the manner of a nineteenth century life saving station.
