When Linda Franklin approached us with a 50 ft. X 50 ft. lot on Wrightsville Beach, we did not know if we could design a new house that would meet her needs. She wanted a kitchen and dining room large enough to host dinner parties. Spaces needed to be included for storage, study, sleep and sun. Most importantly, Linda did not want the house to feel like it is too big for the lot. We decided to design the house in a traditional “craftsman” style. The large overhangs help shade the windows and the roof brackets add detail to the elevations. Open roof framing and divided window lights add to the traditional feel of the house. We decided the master bedroom suite would be in the “attic” to reduce the apparent size of the house. The living, dining and kitchen areas are on the floor below. On the ground floor, we used the brick pavers from the carport for the floor of the foyer. Not only do they look great, but also they are easy to clean and could care less if they get wet.
